GetUp! Climate Torch meets the Save the Mary River Campaign/ParadiseProjection (01).jpg

Save the Mary River campaigners finally found a good use for a dam wall...
At Paradise Dam on the Burnett River, they projected a message that was pretty hard to miss!
Perhaps the sentiment should have been "Save the Mary River from a fate worse then Paradise!"

This message takes on a new importance when you consider that to the left of the projection is the
'state of the art' fish lift designed to facilitate fish movement over the wall at Paradise Dam.
Fraught with operational difficulties, and at the mercy of dwindling water levels, this lift has never
operated in the way it was promised, and as a result, fish are suffering a reduced gene pool,
inability to migrate to breeding locations, and face probable extinction over time.
Lungfish are only naturally found in two rivers in the world... here in the Burnett River, and in the Mary.

"Tell them to get stuffed"
Many have likened the campaign to save the Mary Valley to that of the iconic Australian film, The Castle.
This classic line from the film sums up the prevailing attitude of campaigners and makes it pretty clear why
they're a thorn in the side of a government hell-bent on damming the Mary River.
