These overhanging sandpaper fig trees grow along the Kandanga Creek, a tributary of the Mary River, and are typical of much beautiful stream and riverbank vegetation in the Mary Valley which the state government declared as “degraded farmland”. Sandpaper figs provide essential habitat for many species, including the endangered Mary River Turtle, platypus, and the rare Coxen’s Fig Parrot, which is only found in this part of Australia. The state government has ignored the significance of this species in their reports on this critically endangered little parrot.
